Great Britain represents the great colonial empire of the 19th century. It previously possessed a system of strategic enclaves to articulate its trade: Gibraltar, Hong Kong...
In the British colonial empire there are several types of colonies:

  •   A  Settlement colonies: Territories that absorbing surpluses of population: Australia, Canada. Within these colonies are the domains with a    greater capacity of self-government like Canada.

  •   B. Exploitation colonies: Colonies supplying raw materials and markets to the metropolis.


India, the principal colony of British exploitation, since 1857 governed directly by the British Crown.
France creates its exploitation colonies in Indochina with the occupation in Annam, Tonkin, Cambodia and Laos.
