4.1. The Imperialism
A. From colonialism to imperialism.
Imperialism is a new term that defines the new concept of colonialism provoked by European political and economic rivalries.
B. Causes of the imperialism:
Economic: overproduction and protectionism caused by economical rivalries made it necessary to search for new markets.
Policies: Europe's prevailing nationalism gives rise to a politics of prestige and territorial power of the European powers. The dominant nationalism in this period gives rise to a policy of prestige among the European nations.
Demographics: The growth of the European population
Social The increase of unemployment during the Great Depression generates emigration to alleviate social pressures.
Other factors such as the missionary and scientific spirit that drive to extend European civilisation and to know the unknown territories.
