The Megalithis monuments
During the last years of the Neolithic and the Metal Ages people built monument of giant stones called megaliths ( from the Greek mega = great and lithos =stone).
The main monuments were:
Menhirs , single and vertical stones.
Dolmens. Verticals stones formed walls which were covered by horizontal blocks . They were used as burial places. There is an important domen near mérida in a place called Lácara.
Cromlechs. They were large circles formed by several menhirs. They were probably used as solar calendar and religious center. The most famous cromlech is located in Stonehenge ( Great Britain) . It was built over 5000 years ago and is formed by enormous stones of 25 tons of weight. There are different theories about its original purpose : a temple , an astronomic observatory or even a sacred burial site.
