1.1 The Iberians
The Iberian peoples lived in the East and South of the Iberian Peninsula from the 8th century BC. They knew the scripture thanks to the Phoenicians and the Greeks,
The Iberians lived in walled settlements built in hills. They were organized in tribes governed by a king or “Régulo". The most powerful groups were the nobles, the priests and the warriors.
The economy was based on the Mediterranean agriculture of cereals, vines and olives and livestock farming. It also highlighted the mining of gold, silver, copper and iron. Besides, the craftsmanship was of quality, especially the forging of swords, the goldsmith (jewels) the ceramics and the fabrics of wool and linen. This quality of its products favoured the development of the trade. The Iberians created their own coins.
The Iberians worshipped mainly female divinities. The religious cult was carried out in the sanctuaries, near the villages, incinerated the deceased and introduced their ashes in urns.
