Task 2 Greek religious beliefs

Greek religion was polytheistic, the believed in a lot of gods. Each city state had its own protector god.
Gods looked human and had human qualities and defects but they were immortal and had super-powers. Zeus was the most powerful god and he was the father of most of them They lived in the Mount Olympus
The most important gods in Greek religion were:

  1. Zeus = Father of the gods. God of ski and thunder

  2. Hera = Zeus´s wife, she is goddess of family.

  3. Hades = Zeus´s brother , god of underworld .

  4. Poseidon = Zeus´s brother, god of oceans.

  5. Athena = Goddess of wisdom and virginity.

  6. Apollo = God of beauty

  7. Ares = God of war

  8. Aphrodite = Goddess of love

  9. Hermes = God of trade

  10. Hephaestus = God of fire and blacksmiths

  11. Dionysus = God of wine

  12. Artemis = Goddess of hunting

The Greeks also believed in heroes , who were sons of immortals and humans. they could do outstanding actions but they were mortals . The most important heroes were Hercules, Achilles, Theseus or Perseus.

Religious cults

Greek gods lived in temples where priests and priestess served them so people could give them food and money or riches.
Humans could know the gods´ will through oracles. The most important oracle of Greece was in Delphi. There people could know Apollo´s opinions thanks to strange messages
Other important way to worship Greek gods were the sanctuaries. There the greeks could celebrate common rites ( Pan-Hellenic rites ) like sport games . The most important Pan-Hellenic rites were:

  • Olympic Games at sanctuary of Olympia to worship Zeus. The modern Olympic Games comes from these religious rites.

  • Pythic Games at sanctuary of Delphi to worship Apollo
