Pre Hellenic cultures

We can find two important Prehellenic cultures in the Greek area .

  1. The Minoan Civilisation. The first of them was the Minoan or Creta Civilisation from the 2600 BC to the 1400 BC. Minoan civilisation developed on the island of Crete. The political system was based on the Monarchy and the most famous king was Minos who was a famous character of the Greek mythology . The Minoan kingdom was known as a Thalassocracy due to the importance of the sea in its development . The cities most important were Knossos , the capital, Hagia Triada and Phaistos.

  2. The Mycenaean civilisation ( 1600-1100 BC)The origin of this civilisation began with the invasion of the Achaeans (they came from East Europe), who finished with the Minoan civilisation.
It was a civilisation of warriors . Its main cities were Mycenaean and Tiryns. They were surrounded by large walls The mythic Trojan War happened in this period.
