Hellenistic Age

  1. The Macedonian king Phillip II conquered Greece and his son Alexander the Great promoted the conquest of the Persian Empire. After ten years Alexander had conquered the whole Persian dominions . His death in Babylon in 323 BC divided the Empire into his main military chiefs

  2. In the territories conquered by Alexander the great Greek became the official and educated language, and Greek culture and art became fashionable. We call it Hellenism to this expansion of Greek culture through Asia and North Africa and to the fusion of Greek culture with the oriental. The Hellenistic period was a stage of great cultural splendour. Art, poetry, and theatre flourished, and scientific breakthroughs occurred.

  3. The Hellenistic world was a space of great cities. Those that already existed grew and new ones were founded, like Pergamum and Alexandria.

  4. Alexander the great died without having organized his immense empire. Its generals divided the Territory, adopted the title of kings and founded various kingdoms, known as Hellenistic monarchies. In them the Kings, who were divinized, were the highest political and military authority. They highlighted Egypt, Mesopotamia, Thrace and Macedonia.
